Run for the Paws

The local chapter of the Humane Society hosts a dog-friendly 5k around the trails at the airport. It was very chilly that morning, so the pups and I dressed in our jackets!

We met up with Rocco, Kiki, and Marty Moose, and their owners. There were over 300 dogs there... And Sheba barked at every one! She didn't stop from the time we arrived in the parking lot to our drive home. Happy dogs!

River, Roots, & Ruts

Lisa convinced me to be her relay partner is a crazy, muddy, half-marathon. We drove 2 hours to Alva, Florida in our matching shirts and had a wild time!

I started with the first 6.5 miles and met her to hand off our race belt. The course is actually a BMX bike course, with all kinds of steep hills and narrow ledges- it was tough! Our combined time was 02:40:35. The course description is as follows: The 13.1-mile course will take runners through the shadows of moss-laden river oak hammocks, along the banks of the Caloosahatchee, under canopies of sabal palms and past acres of saw palmettos.

We saw all sorts of injuries, including a broken collar bone right in front of me, due to a slip in the mud. I earned this nasty blood blister- it looks way worse than it felt, thankfully.

Sheba is a couch surfer

My darling, sweet Sheba can not seem to keep herself off of the sofa when I'm away! Jamie caught her in the act when she walked in the front door.

Here is one prevention method I thought would work- see the before (above) and after (below)...

Everyday, same story- she loves sleeping on the couch!

She even lays on the cardboard, as if I won't notice the pillow she bumped to the floor.

Or just moves the cardboard off, to enjoy the sprawl.

I've tried everything- cardboard, rolls of aluminum foil, piles of coins, piles of pillows. I read about plastic lattice online and gave it a try. It warned that the dog may try it on the first day, get paw caught in square, and be scared to try again.

Day one- I set it up like this before work:

And this is what I found after work:

But day two and beyond have worked great! It's a simple, and rather elegant I might add, fix, and when guests come over, I can completely stash it underneath. Brilliant! I'd recommend this $12 remedy to anyone with sofa-surfing dogs.

In case you're wondering why I'm not worried about Mavie getting on the couch, it's because he spends his days in the bathtub... Really! After I kiss them goodbye in the morning, he heads directly to the tub and hops in, right through the shower curtain. But he's too stealth for the camera- can't seem to catch him on film!
