Maverick told me there was a mouse in the garage by sitting next to the kitchen door and bumping the doorknob. I didn't want to believe him, but his incessant hunting, complete with exaggerated sniffing, tail-bobbing, and thigh-quivering led me to believe he wasn't fibbing.

Then I found the mouse food... Bumble's grumbles.

The first store was sold out of mouse traps, if that tells you something. On Day 2, I set two traps, chock full of ooey, gooey, peanut buttery goodness. I could hardly sleep, dreading what I might find in the morning...

What I wasn't expecting to find were two sprung traps, void of bait. They were licked so clean they looked brand spanking new.

I reset the traps and headed to work to hopefully forget about my mouse drama, and I saw cat prints across my windshield?!! How can I have a mouse in the garage
and a cat in the yard? Good thing Mav and Sheeb sleep in my bed with me... Or maybe that's why they've been laxing on their guarding duties :)
All day I worried about how smart my MENSA mouse was becoming, plotting out a strategy to sustain life on my peanut butter bait since I sealed up the dog food in an airtight Rubbermaid bin...
And then... I caught one! But he wasn't the only one out there... Because the traps continue to be sprung and baitless.
On day 5, I checked my armory of traps and screamed when I saw a big, fat mouse laying next to an unsprung, still-baited trap. Was this a trick? He was twitching every few seconds (I screamed every time there was a wiggle!)
As it turns out, he ate a hole in the bag of lawn fertilizer which is apparently lethal and laid himself to rest just 6" from the bag, and 6" from the trap. I screamed and swore the whole way to the trash can, using the shovel for transport.
By comparison, this experience is not as bad as my incident with the wolf spider, but needless to say, I can't wait until Henrik comes home!
