Christmas with the Critters

We celebrated with the pups before heading to Pennsylvania. Maverick enjoyed the box as much (or more than!) the toy inside. I so wish they both could have joined us in the snow!

On the farm, the chickens enjoyed the fresh snow- I was a strange sight!

Henrik herded the cows toward the barn- hee haw!

We worked together to corral and lure all 34 cows inside to their assigned stanchions. It went like this: open the barn door, go have drink in milk house, return to find cows inside. Repeat.

The Swedish Cowboy may have made this look easy, but trust me it was a challenge at times. There were many beers consumed during the process.

Last step was to lay down straw for the cows to sleep upon. Fashionable footwear optional ;)

From Pennsylvania, with love...

White Christmas

Christmas just doesn't seem Christmas until the white fluffy stuff! And there was plenty of it.

Knee-deep in the yard, with flurries three days in a row! And constant below-freezing temperatures...

This year was extra special with Henrik joining the family Xmas :)

Christmas spirits are essential for warmth, and best when shared in good company.

Cheers :)

Doggie dress up

Parties at Pat & Lisa's house are infamous for crazy times, usually involving hats. This weekend was no exception- and Mavie and Sheba were such good doggies, putting up with hats and photos all night!

Adventure Race

I may not be keen on having a Christmas tree or decorating the house with lights, but I did kayak and run with antlers :)

It was a gorgeous morning for a race. Jill and I paddled as a tandem "Team Rookery" and won first place!

It just so happened that the other tandem team dropped out just before the race, but we still felt like first place winners, after paddling 3k and running 4k. Followed by the holiday party at night- we were beat by 9pm!

At least we are easy to spot in the photos, since we were the only double kayak out of 70!

Tom & Jerry in real life

Maverick told me there was a mouse in the garage by sitting next to the kitchen door and bumping the doorknob. I didn't want to believe him, but his incessant hunting, complete with exaggerated sniffing, tail-bobbing, and thigh-quivering led me to believe he wasn't fibbing.

Then I found the mouse food... Bumble's grumbles.

The first store was sold out of mouse traps, if that tells you something. On Day 2, I set two traps, chock full of ooey, gooey, peanut buttery goodness. I could hardly sleep, dreading what I might find in the morning...

What I wasn't expecting to find were two sprung traps, void of bait. They were licked so clean they looked brand spanking new.

I reset the traps and headed to work to hopefully forget about my mouse drama, and I saw cat prints across my windshield?!! How can I have a mouse in the garage and a cat in the yard? Good thing Mav and Sheeb sleep in my bed with me... Or maybe that's why they've been laxing on their guarding duties :)

All day I worried about how smart my MENSA mouse was becoming, plotting out a strategy to sustain life on my peanut butter bait since I sealed up the dog food in an airtight Rubbermaid bin...

And then... I caught one! But he wasn't the only one out there... Because the traps continue to be sprung and baitless.

On day 5, I checked my armory of traps and screamed when I saw a big, fat mouse laying next to an unsprung, still-baited trap. Was this a trick? He was twitching every few seconds (I screamed every time there was a wiggle!)

As it turns out, he ate a hole in the bag of lawn fertilizer which is apparently lethal and laid himself to rest just 6" from the bag, and 6" from the trap. I screamed and swore the whole way to the trash can, using the shovel for transport.

By comparison, this experience is not as bad as my incident with the wolf spider, but needless to say, I can't wait until Henrik comes home!

West Virginia

I spent a week in the mountains of West Virginia for a work conference. The scenery was beautiful... And I even saw snowflakes! And Sarah!

That is ice on the bridge. It was in the 20's at night and the warmest daytime temp was 50.

It's great to be back home with my furkids... I have the windows open and the A/C turned off!

Stone crabbing

What better way to spend Thanksgiving than on the boat? I may not eat turkey, but I did try some stone crabs for dinner. I had to- they were caught just a few hours earlier! And they were delicious!

Out of ten traps, we caught 7 huge crabs, and a handful of smaller ones that we threw back, plus a healthy dose of catfish. To be a keeper, the claw must be 2 3/4 inches. You can keep both claws, but then the crab can't catch food until they grow back, so we just kept one and threw them back.

It is unlawful to possess the body of a stone crab- which means you actually have to twist the arms off to get the claw. If you do it just right, there is no blood. Very strange indeed.

The pups were fascinated with the whole ordeal. It was funny to watch.

Back at the ranch, we put the claws in boiling water then chilled them on ice.

This separates the meat from the shell so when you smash it with a hammer, a big hunk of meat comes out. That's the delicious part.

Much less work than shucking snow crabs. Especially when Henrik provides the boat, and the traps, removes the pinchy crab from the trap, twists off claw, drives us back home, cleans the boat while the crabs are cooking and icing, and cracks them open for me to try. For the record, I did put the ice cubes in the pan, haha, but that's about it.

Swedish Salmon

We've been craving salmon, prepared in the Swedish tradition, so Henrik called Mormor (that's Swedish for grandmother) and got the family recipe. Three pounds of salmon, kosher salt, sugar, fresh ground white pepper, and loads of dill, layered in the fridge for days...

Thin slices atop some hard bread (Swedish for delicious cracker) with some lemon wedges (fresh from the yard)...

Invite friends over. Open wine (this year is the best Beaujolais yet)...

And then make my newest version of red-skinned potatoes...

They are called crashed potatoes! Boil until soft, then smash down on a cookie sheet, drizzle with EVOO, salt & pepper, and bake until crispy on edges.

Enjoy!

Shelley's visit

Blonde #2 flew in from Colorado to celebrate her bday. Since this was her 10th anniversary of turning twenty-four, Shelley wanted to explore the nightlife of Tampa and St. Pete. We had a memorable time exploring the white sand beaches, fine dining, and staying at classy hotels. Never would I have thought back in our days at FLB that we would ever be vacationing in Florida and staying at the Westin!

Spooky Halloween

From decorations and pumpkin carving to dressed up doggies and handing out candy, Halloween is always a fun time. Bats, crayons, and Harry Potter, oh my! We bought about 500 pieces of candy (and ate a good portion of that ourselves!)

But... Halloween in Naples can be pricey! Take a look at the cost of hay bales and corn stalks- looks like Dad better load up the wagon and c'mon down. The same goes for Xmas trees (stay tuned)...

Celebrating 21 SoBe Style

Mollie turned 21 years old in South Beach, so this old girl played Mother Hen and took the girls out for a night on the town.

It was an experience, that's for sure! Fantastic people watching!

Air conditioning failure

The house was 92 degrees inside when I came from work- boy were those doggies happy to see me! I let them outside... where it was a brisk 89...

Luckily I know a reliable A/C guy to come to the rescue. Thankfully it was just a bad thermostat, so a semi-affordable fix. Another homeowner lesson learned!

My Birthday Month!

Every year gets better! My desk was decorated at work, complete with carrot cake. Then a bouquet of flowers sent from across the world made all the girls swoon.

Henrik was scheduled for an around-the-world trip during my bday month, and called from Russia (or so he said!) the night of my bday party and wanted to know about all the fun we were having. I had friends over for dinner and drinks and when there was knock at the door, much to my surprise, there was my Prince Charming, grinning ear to ear! Somehow he managed a quick 3-day surprise visit, and the timing was superb. Check out the rental that he brought from the airport, haha; only in South Florida could you get a Crown Vic!!

Lots of good times: food, friends, and wine!

Homemade cupcakes!

And seafood paella!

And my new coffee mugs are so cute I just might start drinking coffee!

And my present to myself this year was a new rug for the living room- you can see who else enjoys it!

Thank you all for keeping this princess spoiled, year after year :)
