Maverick's Summer Vacation

Thank you Mom for taking such good care of our boy for a whole week; he had such a good time running around in the woods. We know for sure that he was a happy dog because he ate every single meal (and has since he's been back at the beach, too!) While Ben and I were visiting, Maverick tried all kinds of new things, such as eating watermelon on the front lawn and jumping through hula hoops. He saw cows and a baby one licked him on the head!

While Grammy K was at home taking care of the monster, we were all dressed up and celebrating Tim's wedding! Two weddings in seven days... and neither of us wore the same outfit! It was wonderful to catch up with everyone from high school and introduce Ben to the old gang. And we even got to meet the newest member of Dave's family, little Noah. Tiny little cutie pie!

Pittsburgh!

In a very short trip, Ben and I traveled to a wedding in Pittsburgh last weekend. We arrived in Waterford on Saturday night and drove to Pittsburgh on Sunday morning! Maverick is spending the week with his Grammy K and having a great time chasing chipmunks and all kinds of critters in the woods. She said all he wants to do is be outside, looking around, sniffing the air, and baking his brain the sunshine, haha. We sure do miss him, though!

The wedding was lovely; not only did Ben look fabulous in his new suit, but I also got to meet Keith, whom Ben has been friends with since high school! The father of the bride had emergency open-heart surgery the day before the wedding, so a local news station set up cameras to broadcast the wedding into his hospital room so he could see his daughter get married. She felt so badly that her dad could not be there for the ceremony, so the minister and bridal party surprised him earlier in the day and Keith and Lynn exchanged vows right at Shady Side Hospital! The family was interviewed by reporters and it was even aired on the national news! It was fun to explore Pittsburgh; its getting so much "greener" than it used to be!

On our way back to the coast, we took a detour near Somerset, PA, and visited Falling Water, the ever-famous Kaufmann estate that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1936. It really has a stream running through the house, its amazing. Ben thoroughly enjoyed not only the architecture... but the birds, too! Afterwards, we dined on yummy organic vegetarian food we picked up and checked out Ohiopyle State Park, famous for rafting on the Youghiogheny River that runs through the park. It was a really nice stopover on the very long drive back :)

Woodland Oasis

Finally, here are the pics from the rest of the house! Click on each picture to enlarge for more detail. We still have lots of things to hang on the walls and decorate to make it more cozy, but we've really been enjoying all of the space compared to our little apartment! The living room and kitchen are both huge open rooms, with high ceilings and low windows. I have been enjoying the big island in the kitchen, in fact, we sit at the bar and eat every once in a while. The door in the kitchen opens onto the porch in the backyard.

The guest room is ready for visitors at any time! Otis spends the night in his big box, but cruises the backyard during daylight hours. We need to have some visitors because we keep referring to it as the "repti-room" haha. The guest bathroom is quite spacious and includes a washer and dryer (you can see the reflection of the laundry room doors in the mirror). Every room has a ceiling fan and we haven't turned on the heat or the a/c since we've been here! All of the big windows provide us with nice fresh air and since the house is surrounded by trees, its really not that hot, at least not yet!

The master bedroom seems vast, including the plentiful closet space! I can really get used to it though :) We can hear and see birds out the huge windows, right from the bed! (Notice my clothesline through the window on the right.) We've also discovered that Maverick spends his entire day napping on the bed while we're away, as you can see in this picture taken after work. I put out his favorite blankie, so he can be comfy, but he makes quite a nest while we're away! And he thinks we don't even notice, silly Maverick.

The backyard is really coming along- our garden is sprouting up all kinds of green stuff, and our tomatoes actually have blossoms, yay! The area to the right where the hummingbird feeders are hanging is seeded with wildflowers and will be attracting butterflies, birdies, and dragonflies in no time. We've been watching our hummers out there and one has some white paint on his head (he probably was caught before and is under study by someone nearby... Ben is checking into it.) Chickadees, cardinals, and a brown thrasher have been visiting the feeder already, and Ben just put it up this weekend! And those are my new azalea bushes behind the feeder.

We're really loving in our new woodland oasis :)

Have a Heart

We're fed up with all of the feral cats everywhere and picked up a have a heart trap from animal control. Ben made a peanut butter sandwich and baited two traps last night... and look at the cutie pie that we captured! We were expecting this mangey cat we keep seeing around, but got this poor possum instead!

The backyard is free of predators though, because Mr. Maverick is on patrol. He's been protecting my gerber daisies (he even chased off a butterfly!) in his big backyard. He's just smitten with his yard and new house, can't you tell?

Sneak Peak

Here is a very quick look at some of our house- bathroom and living room. Both bathrooms seem grandiose compared to our last little hole-in-the-wall :) The living room is nearly complete now with the huge coffee table, but we're in the market for some sofa covers... and a BIGGER tv since ours looks like a postage stamp, haha. Notice Mav's new bowls on the left side. He has a nice low window right above his bowls and he's easily distracted with wildlife out the window when its grumbly time. I guess he's adjusted to the new place already because he's eaten 21 of the last 23 meals, which is a world record for this finicky pup!

Yard Work

We had a fabulous weekend in this big new house! First, we did a ton of yard work, which is actually really satisfying. Ben put a border around the garden and started on another flower bed chock full of gerber daisies! I haven't been able to get a picture yet because we worked until it rained yesterday and it hasn't stopped yet! So glad we got them all in the ground though :)

We also toured the local thrift shops and picked up a whole carload of goodies (yes, that is Ben squished in the front seat with lattice balancing on his head!) We picked up a coffee table, shower organizer, paper towel holder, bed skirt, and tv stand, all for $50! Then a trip to Home Depot to get the lattice for our morning glory trellis and home to meet the cable guy. Check out the before and after of our ugly a/c stand! More pictures to come :)
