Strawberry Fields Forever

Its been seven years since I've worked at the strawberry patch!  But I'm back for a few weeks and thoroughly enjoying myself.  What could be better than working on my tan and filling my belly with berries?  I started picking in 1992 and then worked in the U-pick section until I graduated from college.  This summer I am managing the pickers and selling berries at the stand.  And working on my Russian, one phrase at a time.  So far the pickers have taught me to say good morning and I love you, haha!  What a great way to spend my summer vacation- in the field at sun-up and home with the pups by afternoon :)

No More Cone!

Mav received a clean bill of health from my dad's veterinarian- the staples are out and no more cone!  Now he has just a little scar and his fur is still growing back.  We celebrated with a puppy cone at the dairy isle on the way home!

Farm Dogs

We've visited the farm almost everyday, and these dogs are turning into farm dogs!  They love to hunt, play, sniff, and pee on everything!  Maverick is quite a mouser and Sheba likes the chickens (literally, she's caught two of them in her mouth!)
The cone cannot stop the Mav!  He plows through to get wherever he wants to go- you can see all the scratches and scuffs on the plastic.  The cows are really curious about his lampshade, and Mav even got a kiss from a big brown one!

Shipwreck UPDATE

According to a recent article on cnn.com, the Corolla Shipwreck that I wrote about earlier is even older than expected: it is now expected to be a commerce ship traveling from England in 1609.  This particular ship has very similar timbers and construction to the Sea Venture which was the flagship of a fleet of seven ships sailing people and supplies to the Jamestown colony.  The remains of the Sea Venture have been discovered off the coast of Bermuda (which is only 40 miles out to sea from the Outer Banks).

The size of the ship is speculated to be between 80-110 feet long and 30-35 feet wide.  Much larger than first reported (the HMS Swift was only 70ft x 16ft) and even older (the HMS Swift ran aground in 1698), this ship is a real find.  Must be why CNN decided to cover a story on the shipwreck in the tiny little village of Corolla!

Fun in the Field

Maverick is doing so well with his lampshade!  We enjoyed some fun in the field this morning and he continued to amaze me with his toughness!  He is up to his usual antics and managing just fine.  And his staples look great- probably thanks to Miss Sheba licking it all the time.  She says she's sorry to have hurt brother and is giving him kisses to make it better :)  She had a lovely time rolling in the wildflowers and swimming in the pond.  Two happy doggies!

Pet Drama: Part Two

Notice Otis's new pen, that is, penitentiary!  My dad built this enclosure to keep him contained!

As if Mav's visit to the emergency vet on a holiday weekend wasn't enough for me, Otis decided to give me a scare as well!  He was cruisin' in the yard, enjoying the sunshine, and in the blink of an eye, he was gone.  We had a giant search party scanning the forest for the little devil and after FOUR HOURS and lots of emotions... he strolled out of the flower bed like it was nothing!  So glad to have him back but man, these pets nearly gave me more than one heart attack!
